The 2016 women's tennis team was an historic one, becoming the first Islanders athletic program to go undefeated during the regular season and head to the NCAA Tournament with a record of 24-0. They were only taken down in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to eventual champions #15 Stanford to still end with a 24-1 mark on the season, posting the best record in the history of the conference.
"The 2016 women's tennis team achieved unprecedented success to place themselves as one of the greatest Islanders teams in the history of Islanders Athletics," saidÂ
Adrian Rodriguez, vice president of intercollegiate athletics. "Their accomplishments are incredibly deserving of this honor, and I am thrilled to welcome the 2016 women's tennis team into the 2025 Hall of Honor!"
Â
At the time, the team had earned the program's third and fourth championships after winning both the Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles that year for the second time each. The program has gone on to now hoist six regular season titles and seven tournament titles total, both conference records for women's tennis.
Â
"This is one of the greatest team in the history of the Southland Conference in any sport!" said head coachÂ
Steve Moore. "They were the only team in the country to enter the NCAA Championships undefeated at 24-0! I cannot emphasize enough the rarity and greatness of that accomplishment, but this team's greatest accomplishment was not their record: it was their special character, team unity, and the true family this team was! I can say in 31 years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, I've never seen a team more committed to character, family, hard work, or fighting for and encouraging each other than these Islanders! They truly stood for every good value you could ask for, and what is most special is they are all just as close today as when they played together. They are true role models for every young athlete to copy!"
