The 1971 tennis team featuring Humphrey Hose, Jorge Andrew, Roberto Chavez, Ken de Koning, Oscar Salas, Marc Boulle and Fredi Oporto, is undoubtedly one of the best teams to ever represent Corpus Christi. Under the leadership of Hall of Honor member Bob Mapes, the 1971 Tarpons made a splash in the squads first year of Division I competition by finishing the season ranked No. 5 in the country.
 
Led by another Hall of Honor Member in Humphrey Hose, the Tarpons advanced to the NCAA National Championships hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Hose was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the nation at one point during 1971 and was recognized as an All-American by the NCAA.
