CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A split force of Islanders saw two advance at the Harlingen Pro Futures while a quartet of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi players added a total of five victories on day two of the UTSA Cup.
In the opening day of the Harlingen Pro Futures, Islanders
Kevin Bettendroffer and
Cagatay Soke each dropped opening round matches. Bettendroffer fell to Oscar Janglin of Rice by a 7-6 (0), 6-1 score while Soke was upended 6-3, 6-4 by Julian Cash.
Freshman
Gonzalo Achondo, the 14-seed in the qualifying draw, advanced into Sunday's second round by way of a bye. Former player turned assistant coach for the Islanders,
Guillaume Rauseo also advanced to the second round of the Pro Futures with a 6-2, 6-1 win over John Goodwin.
UTSA CUP
In day two in San Antonio,
Paul Cook highlighted the Islander contingent with a pair of wins in singles play. Cook defeated Nikita Lis of Southland rival Lamar in a tight three-setter. The Islander won 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 in a third set tiebreak. Lis spent 2016 at the number two spot for the Cardinals.
In his second match, Cook knocked off Borunda of UTSA in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Senior
Biyik Akinshemoyin and sophomore
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas added singles wins as well. Akinshemoyin rolled with a pair of 6-4 sets in his victory while Pedrosa Cuevas won in 6-2, 6-1 fashion.
In doubles play, the Islanders fell in a pair of matches to Lamar. The
Paul Cook and
Mitchell Cook tandem fell to Nikita Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem by a 6-1 score while Akinshemoyin and Pedrosa Cuevas dropped a heartbreaker to Juuso Laitinen and Logan Powell, 7-6 (7).
The Harlingen Pro Futures continue with round two of the qualifying draw Sunday while play at the UTSA Cup concludes.
