Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open
The Islander Open has been a yearly tennis tournament since 1998, beginning the first year Islanders Athletics went Division I and is the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tournament of the year. Every NCAA Division I tennis program in Texas has played in the Islander Open over the past 28 years. The Islander Open began being named the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open after U.S. Marine and former Islanders Tennis player, Jake Frederick, in 2020.
Jake Frederick was an Islander Tennis player, who joined the team in 2002 under head coach Steve Moore and later became an F-18 Marine pilot. Jake was beloved in the Corpus Christi community as he and his brother, Joel, played tennis for the Islanders and went on to become Marine pilots. Sadly, in 2016, Jake gave his life for his country during a flight over the Pacific Ocean. We are honored beyond words to name this Tournament after this great Islander, husband, Father, and courageous man who gave his life to protect our freedoms.
