Tennis Eyes Titles in Final Week

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – On the road in the final week of regular season play, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis opens a pivotal week on the road at Abilene Christian on Wednesday.
 
Both Islanders squads will open a busy week of action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday against the Wildcats. The women will then continue with a Thursday afternoon matchup against Central Arkansas in Waco. The men follow with Senior Day at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
 
The men are in the midst of a dominant 69-5 run over the past 11 years in Southland Conference play. The Islander women are 39-3 overall in the past two years and are 22-1 in Southland matches during that span.
 
Wednesday's matchups at Abilene Christian pit two of the top teams in the Southland on either side.
 
For the women, the league-leading Islanders face a second-place ACU squad while the men's match pits the undefeated Islanders against a 3-1 and third-place Wildcats squad.
 
The women will then face another challenge from Central Arkansas on Thursday afternoon in Waco. The Bears are tied for second in the conference, trailing only the Blue and Green.
 
Finally, Friday sees the Islanders men return home for Senior Day against Southland Conference rival Lamar. The battle will determine the regular season champion and could be a preview of the Southland Conference Tournament finals. The Islanders and Cardinals have met in the title match in each of the last four years.
 
The men will celebrate five seniors in Kevin Bettendroffer, Paul Cook, Mitchell Cook, Maximilian Ilic and Trevor Gittinger. Senior recognition will take place between the doubles and singles points at approximately 2:45 p.m.
