CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams are in action this weekend at the ITA Texas Regionals. Both teams start competition tomorrow as the men are in Fort Worth, hosted by TCU, and the women are in Waco, hosted by Baylor.
Both teams are in action for the second time this fall, after each played at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open in Corpus Christi last month. The women's team will have four players competing in Waco, while the men's side will have seven players in action this weekend in Fort Worth.
The Texas Regionals showcases every division one program in the state and is widely considered the strongest region in the country on the men's and women's side featuring multiple national championship teams over the pas five seasons.
The Islanders have traditionally performed well in the strong region, including the historic performance last season from Josu Garmendia and Matt Coignet, who reached the semifinals after defeating ranked opponents including TCU, Texas A&M, and Baylor along the way.Â
"These Islanders have been working incredibly hard and have improved so much in the past six weeks," said head coach
Steve Moore. "Their hard work and sacrifice have really paid off for them, and they are moving better and hitting the ball bigger than ever. I love our character, and we are ready to fight for each other! Present point warriors, go Islanders."
