Three Islanders Reach Finals of SLC Individual Championships

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams traveled to compete in the Southland Conference Individual Championships this weekend. Six Islanders made the trip to compete, two in singles and four in doubles, as the best from the conference came together to compete in the fall. Three Islanders from the women's team reached the finals, which were played today.

SINGLES
Leticia Tarocco started play on Friday as she was the three seed in the women's singles draw. She cruised into the semifinals with a 6-1,6-2 victory over her opponent from Nicholls State. She returned to action the following day and had to work a little harder against the number two seed from Lamar, but the junior still won in straight sets 7-5,6-3. Andres Delgadillo was the number two seed in the men's singles draw for the Islanders. He went down in his first match in the semifinals against Lamar 6-3,6-3. Tarocco's run came to an end in the finals this morning as she fell to the top seed from McNeese 6-1,6-0.

DOUBLES
Mikel Garmendia and Jami Savolainen paired up as the three seed in the men's doubles draw. The Islanders have won the men's doubles the past two seasons, but they couldn't three-peat as the Corpus Christi pair in the semifinals to UTRGV 6-3,7-6(10-8). Yana Mykytyn and Kseniya Ramanouskaya were the top seed in the women's doubles draw. After making it to the championship last year, the pair did it again as they won their semifinal match over Southeastern Louisiana 7-5,6-1. This afternoon, the Islander pair faced hosts McNeese State in the championship but came out on the short end 6-4,6-4.

Both tennis sides are back in action next weekend when they head to Harlingen, Texas, for the ITA Harlingen Pro Future.
