CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs hit the road for the first time this season as they competed in the ITA Texas Regionals. The men's team was in Fort Worth at TCU while the women's side was in Waco at Baylor. The highlight of the weekend was the doubles run of the Islander pair of
Kseniya Ramanouskaya and
Yana Mykytyn, who reached the quarterfinals.
Women's Singles
The women's side had two individuals in the qualifying bracket and two straight into the main draw in Waco this weekend.
Adriana Jiménez Casado took the first set in her match but fell in the final two closely contested sets (4-6,7-6,7-5).
Marie Krymlová picked up a straight-set win over her SMU opponent in the first round (6-2-7-6) but fell in straight sets in the second round (6-3,6-4). In the main draw,
Kseniya Ramanouskaya made the deepest run of all the Islanders this weekend. She rolled to a first-round win (6-1,6-4) before making easy work of her second-round opponent from Abilene Christian (6-0,6-4). Ramanouskaya's run came to an end in the round of 16 as she fell to the three seed from Rice. The Islanders' other main draw entry,
Yana Mykytyn, fell in straight sets to her opponent from Houston in the first round.
Women's Double
The story of the weekend was the Islander pair of
Kseniya Ramanouskaya and
Yana Mykytyn in the women's doubles event. Their seeding earned them a bye in the first round before they cruised to an 8-1 win over their SFA opponents in the round of 32. Next, they won a hard fought match 8-7, 7-4 in the tiebreaker, over their Texas Tech opponents in the round of 16. The pair's run came to an end in the quarterfinals against their opponents from Baylor, 8-3. Their trip to the quarterfinals is the furthest any Islander doubles team has advanced in the history of the ITA Texas Regionals, against the best DI teams from the state of Texas. The regional features multiple national championship teams over the past ten seasons, and is widely considered the toughest regional in the country.
"We are incredibly proud of Yana and Ksenia for making the quarterfinals of the Texas Regional," said head coach
Steve Moore. "This is a tremendous accomplishment with 26 DI teams in Texas. Their play is a shining moment for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis."
