CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Returning to Southland Conference action, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis heads to New Orleans for a pair of showdowns on Sunday.
The Islanders and Privateers are slated to clash at 11 a.m. Sunday morning. A&M-Corpus Christi enters Sunday's tilt riding momentum from wins on both the men's and women's side over UTSA in the midweek. The men picked up a 5-2 win while the women won a thriller 4-3 match.
For the men, the showdown with New Orleans is the second Southland Conference match of the season. At 1-0, the Islanders sit third but are just a half-game back of a three-way tie for first. New Orleans sits at 2-2 in Southland play and is fourth in the league.
The Islanders welcomed the return of senior
Paul Cook in the midweek. The veteran's return keyed a 5-2 victory over the Roadrunners on Wednesday. New Orleans, meanwhile, dropped its last match, a 6-1 loss at the hands of Southland front-runner Lamar.
The Corpus Christi women are seeking their fourth consecutive victory on Sunday. The Islanders enter the match with a 4-1 Southland mark and in sole possession of first in the league standings. New Orleans is one of three teams hot on the heels of the Islanders, as the Privateers are just a half-game behind at 4-2 on the season in Southland action.
Veteran
Jelena Dzinic won a 10-8 tiebreak in the third set Wednesday against UTSA to give the Islanders one of their most exciting victories in recent memory. Dzinic and the Islanders will be looking to strengthen their lead in the conference standings against the Privateers with just five matches remaining in the regular season after Sunday.
