CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team returns to the diamond this weekend for a three-game set at Abilene Christian. The series opens on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 5&7 p.m., before the finale at noon on Saturday.
The Islanders (6-20) are coming off 5-4 win over Northwestern State last Saturday.
Liz Carter struck out seven, while
Lacey Boyd homered for the second time this season.
Savannah Sandoval had a career day, going 3-for-4 with two runs on the afternoon.
In her first weekend back from injury,
Mackinzee Griebel went 5-for-9 through the series with an RBI to take the team lead with a .338 clip at the plate. Griebel and Boyd, who is hitting .328, rank 13th and 15th in the Southland Conference, respectively
For Carter, the Austin native has jumped up 70th in the nation in strikes with 86, after ringing up 15 last weekend. Carter sits fourth in the league in punchouts and 15th with a .260 opponent batting average.
The Islanders face the Wildcats on the road after taking one of three last year at Chapman Field. Carter pulled double duty, striking out seven and driving in a run, while
Candice Hadd and
Megan Mitchell plated runners in the 4-3 win.
In their final season of transitioning to Division I, the Wildcats are 8-1 in Southland Conference play and 22-11 overall. Peyton Hedrick leads the league in slugging with a .707 clip and ranks second in RBI with 30. Sidney Holman and Hannah Null have been a formidable duo in the circle for the Wildcats. Both pitchers have made 26 appearances, led by Holman posting a 12-3 record with a 2.03 ERA.
