CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Over the last five years, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team seniors
Kassie Jones,
Camesha Davis and
Ashanti Plummer have raised the standard of play on the Island, setting more than 20 team records and securing three berths to the Southland Conference Tournament.
On Saturday morning, the Islanders (11-17, 7-10) will have the opportunity to honor the senior class at home one last time, as the Blue and Green hosts Incarnate Word for the regular season finale at 11:30 a.m. on Stripes Court at the American Bank Center, presented by Christus Spohn.
SUPER SENIORS
>> The Islanders senior class has won 57 games over five years on the Island.
>> The seniors took part in setting more than 20 school records, including single-game rebounding margin ( 31 vs. Southeastern La., Jan. 11, 2017), fewest points allowed in a Southland Conference game (37 at Sam Houston State, Jan. 21, 2017) and largest margin of victory (66, vs. Huston-Tillotson, 12/30/15).
>> Plummer ranks fourth in program history with 87 blocks entering Saturday's game. Plummer bounced back from missing the entire season last year through injury by posting career highs in scoring, blocks and free throws.
>> Davis ranks fourth in career rebounds, fourth in defensive rebounds, seventh in offensive rebounds, third in blocks and fourth in double doubles. Her four straight double-doubles earlier this season tied for the school record for most consecutive double-doubles.
>> An 83-percent free throw shooter, Jones holds the record for career for free throw percentage. Jones set the single-game record for steals with eight against Houston Baptist in 2015. Earlier this season, Jones became the 11th player in program history to record 100 steals in a career.
KATY BOUND
>> With their 68-51 over Houston Baptist on Wednesday night, the Islanders secured their place in the conference tournament next week.
>> Jones dropped her second straight 20-point game to lead all scorers, while 10 Islanders put points on the board.
>> Corpus Christi committed just nine turnovers on the night to tie for the fifth fewest in program history.
DEFENSE DOES IT RIGHT
>> The Islanders set the single-season record for blocks with six rejections against HBU, surpassing the 113 from 2003-04.
>> Corpus Christi scored 23 points off turnovers on Wednesday, marking the sixth 20-point game from opponent giveaways this season.
>> The Islanders have five games with 10 or more steals in 2016-17.
>> The Blue and Green rank first in the league in block (4.2 bpg), third in scoring defense (61.2 ppg) and third in opponent rebounding (34 rpg).
SERIES HISTORY
>> The Islanders aim to bounce back after falling to Incarnate Word (9-19, 7-10) for the first time, 63-56, two weeks ago.
>> Corpus Christi is a perfect 3-0 when playing at the Coastal Bend and 5-1 overall.
>>
Dalesia Booth's 23 points against the Cardinals on Feb. 15 were the second most scored by an Islander against UIW. Assistant coach
Jasmine Shaw set the record with 28 back on Feb. 6, 2014.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
>> UIW has won three of their last four games coming into Saturday's contest.
>> Celia Garcia Paunero continues to average a double-double with 17.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, ranking fifth and first in the league, respectively.
>> Ineligible for the league tournament until next season, Saturday will be the final game in the careers of Paunero, Tanjunique Ajeto and Cheyenne Berry.
