Wichita State Upends Islanders

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the doubles point Thursday morning against Wichita State, but was unable to keep the momentum going as the Shockers rallied for a 4-1 victory.

Indoors at the Weller Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas, the Islanders jumped to a 1-0 lead thanks wins on courts one and two of doubles action.

Senior Kevin Bettendroffer and freshman William Mottet knocked off Wichita State's top pair of Eddie Stoica and Haru Inoue by a 7-5 score. Meanwhile, Cagatay Soke and Paul Cook claimed a 6-3 victory on court two to give the Islanders the early advantage. Soke and Cook won by a 6-3 score over Miroslav Herzan and Murkel Dellien for the Shockers.

"I thought we did some things very well today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We played great doubles, but overall we lost to a better and more experienced team in singles. I thought our guys fought hard, especially at certain spots and I like the future for this young team. They are learning these concepts better and better each week and you can only get experience through experience. Give coach Danny Bryan and Wichita State credit, they rebounded strong after doubles and that's a great team."
In singles play, Wichita State found its groove, grabbing wins at one along with four, five and six to complete the rally.

When the match was called to completion, Soke led at number two in the second set. The freshman snagged a tight 7-6 first set over Miroslav Herzan from Wichita State.

Haru Inoue defeated Bettendroffer from the Islanders at the top spot. Bettendroffer fell 6-1, 6-3. At four, freshman William Mottet suffered his first defeat of the season. Mottet was upended by Eddie Stoica in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-1 score.

Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas fell at five by a 6-3, 6-1 mark and Gonzalo Achondo dropped his match at six, 6-0, 6-0.

BOUNCE BACK FRIDAY

The Islanders will have the opportunity to rebound immediately as the Blue and Green heads to Louisiana to take on the rival Ragin' Cajuns Friday afternoon. First serve for the men is set for 3:30 p.m.
