Box Score 2 HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team split a doubleheader on the road at Texas Southern on Wednesday. The Islanders (2-5) bested the Tigers (1-1) 1-0 in the opening contest, before dropping game two 4-2.
GAME ONE
Liz Carter (2-2) powered her way to a second straight win. The Austin native scattered five hits and struck out eight to guide the Blue and Green.
A&M-Corpus Christi needed just two hits in the win. Carter plated leadoff hitter
Megan Mitchell in the top of the first to give the Islanders the lead.

Mackinzee Griebel moved her over with a sacrifice bunt.
>> Carter sent a 1-1 pitch off the wall in left center for an RBI double.
- Bottom of the First
>> Carter faced her first test of the day with a runner on third and one out. The senior struck out Dominique Tello before getting Kierra Patton to pop up to second.

>> Carter bookended the inning with strikeouts. An error by
Alexis Richardson gave the hosts two runners in scoring position with one out.
>> Marissa Padron drew a walk after a lengthy at bat to load the bases.
>> Carter recorded out number two by throwing home on a grounder back to the circle.
>> The Islanders ace closed the frame with a strikeout on five pitches.
- Bottom of the Seventh
>> The Tigers put runners on second and third with two outs, following a pair of infield singles and a groundout to move them over.
>> With the game on the line, Carter's first offering to Terren Vinson fooled the Tigers' leadoff hitter into swinging and hitting a slow dribbler back to Carter for the final out.
GAME TWO
Kandace Johnson stepped into the circle for the Islanders. The Atascocita native look the loss despite surrendering seven hits and four runs, two earned, with a career-high three strikeouts.
A&M-Corpus Christi scratched an unearned run across on a TSU error, while the hosts picked up two runs on two miscues by the Blue and Green. Texas Southern outhit the Islanders 7-6.
KEY INNINGS
- Bottom of the Second
>> Zariah Robbins came in to pinch run for Chanler Powell, who had doubled down the left field line.
>> Robbins advanced to third on a wild pitch, before stealing home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
- Top of the Third

Savannah Sandoval drew a walk on five pitches. After Mitchell put her on second on a groundout,
Mackinzee Griebel appeared to only move the leftfielder to third.
>> Texas Southern third baseman Madilynn Marek sailed the throw to first and allowed Sandoval to come home and even the score.
- Bottom of the Fourth
>> The Tigers took the lead after Jocilynn Ellis scored on a throwing error by the Islanders. Ellis was on second after singling with one out prior to Jade Bismark's at bat.
- Bottom of the Fifth
>> The hosts added to their lead with a pair of runs.
>> Tello singled through the right side to plate Vinson.
>> One batter later, Sierra Valdez tallied an RBI double to right to make the score 4-1.
- Top of the Sixth
>> Griebel stole second after singling to leadoff the inning.
>> Kandance Johnson came to the plate as the tying run. Her groundout to second put the Griebel on third with one out.
>> TSU brought Jasmin Fulmore in for the save opportunity.
>> Carter lined a shot at Fulmore that fell for a hit and allowed Griebel to score.

>> The Islanders are now 15-2 against the Tigers.

Liz Carter has a three-game hitting streak dating back to the Texas Tech game on Sunday. Carter is also 14 strikeouts away from becoming the second player in program history to record 400 punchouts in a career.
AWAITING ALABAMA
The Islanders will have the weekend off before travelling to Mobile, Ala. on Feb. 24-26. A&M-Corpus Christi will face Tennessee Tech, Middle Tennessee and South Alabama.
