CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off the first win and the first no-hitter of the
Blake Miller era, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team travels to Houston to face Texas Southern for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m.
The Islanders (1-4) wrapped up the CenturyLink Classic, hosted by Texas State, in memorable fashion with a 2-0 victory over Texas Tech, powered by nine-strikeout no-hitter from senior
Liz Carter.
The senior shook off a pair of rough starts last weekend to close out the tournament by going the distance in just 93 pitches.
Offensively, freshman
Kandace Johnson hit .333 on the weekend along with the game-winning home run against the Red Raiders in the top of the sixth.
Mackinzee Griebel opened the year with a four-game hitting streak and a .286 batting average through the first five games.
Aspen Auger recorded a trio of hits during opening weekend.
Last weekend saw the debuts of Johnson,
Lexi Shaw,
Lacey Boyd,
Jade Torres and
Alexis Richardson. Shaw, in addition to Carter, added a pair of base hits in the win over Texas Tech. Boyd, playing behind the plate against Texas Tech on Friday, threw out the first attempted steal of the year.
FACING THE TIGERS
Wednesday marks the first of three midweek series against SWAC schools during the 2017 season, with a pair of doubleheaders against Prairie View A&M on March 8 and 29.
The Tigers will play their season opener against the Islanders after having last weekend off. A&M-Corpus Christi is 14-1 all time against Texas Southern and 4-0 in Houston.
