Attacking the Aggies

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Back from a week off from Thanksgiving break, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday at the Dugan Wellness Center to face Panhandle State.
 
The Islanders (2-2) square off with the Aggies (1-5, DII) in the Holiday Inn North Padre Island Challenge on Wednesday. The game will be the first meeting between the two programs.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi coming off an 83-50 victory last week against Montana Tech that saw four players score in double-figures since March 1, 2015 against Houston Baptist.
 
The Blue and Green is in the midst of a four-game homestand, the longest of the year. Following Wednesday's game against Panhandle State, the Islanders will play UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union, on Saturday, before wrapping up the Holiday Inn North Padre Island Challenge next Tuesday against Schreiner.
 
GAME 4 REWIND
The Islanders crushed Montana Tech last Wednesday on Stripes Court at the American Bank Center to win by 33 points.
Dalesia Booth led all scorers with 21 points, from cool 9-of-10 from the field.
>> A&M-Corpus Christi saw four players reach double figures in scoring in Booth, Emma Young, Ashanti Plummer and Camesha Davis.
>> Davis recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
>> The 33-point margin of victory and 24-rebound advantage against Montana Tech were the most for A&M-Corpus Christi since a 99-33 win over Huston-Tillotson on Dec. 30, 2014.
>> Limiting the Orediggers to just 24.6-percent shooting from the field, the Islanders held an opponent to its lowest shooting clip in a game since New Orleans shot 23.8-percent on Jan. 24, 2015.
>> The Blue and Green drained one 3-pointer against the Orediggers, which is the first time the Islanders won a game with one make from downtown since Nov. 21, 2009 at Texas Southern.
 
BLOCK PARTY         
>> A&M-Corpus Christi rejected nine shots last Wednesday against Montana Tech. It was the 12th time that the Islanders rejected nine or more shots in a game.
>> Led by Camesha Davis' seven swats this season, the Blue and Green have 18 blocks on the year for a 4.5 per game average, which is the most through four games in program history.
>> The Islanders rank first in the Southland Conference and 69th nationally in blocks per game.
 
DAVIS DOUBLE-DOUBLE DOUBLES        
>> Camesha Davis recorded her second straight double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds against Montana Tech, after posting 13 points and 10 rebounds against Texas State on Nov. 18.
>> Davis became the first player since Olivia Fouty in 2014-15 to record back-to-back double doubles.
>> The DeSoto native moved into a tie with Rachel Grayson (1999-01) for eighth on the all-time list with eight double-doubles.
 
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE   
>> The Blue and Green have pestered opposing offenses throughout the year, holding opponents to just a 32.5-percent clip from the field.
>> That mark ranks second in the Southland Conference and 48th in the country.
>> A&M-Corpus Christi also sits third in the SLC, allowing just 61 points per game.
 
OLD AND YOUNG    
>> The 2016-17 roster for the Islanders is a mix between old and young, with three seniors and five freshmen leading the way through four games.
>> The upperclassmen leadership of Camesha Davis, Kassie Jones and Ashanti Plummer has combined to score an average of 26.5 points per game this year.
>> Rookies Emma Young, Tiara Matthews, Dae Dae Evans, Rayanna Carter and Dalesia Booth have teamed up to chip in 20.5 points per game through the opening four contests.
>> Combined, the rookies and senior have scored 80-percent of the Islanders' points this year.
 
BACK WHERE I COME FROM       
>> Head coach Royce Chadwick enters Wednesday's game ranked 49th on the NCAA all-time wins list with a record of 611-375.
>> A win against Panhandle State will move Chadwick into a tie with Susan Dunagan (Roanoke 1982-14) for 48th.
>> Wednesday will also have special significance for Chadwick, as Panhandle State was his first collegiate coaching stop back in 1984.
>> The Floydada native guided the Aggies to 39 wins during his two-year tenure in Goodwell, Okla., including the first of his 11 20-win seasons in his career.
>> Chadwick guided Panhandle to two consecutive trips the NAIA National Tournament.
 
PLAYER NOTES
>> Uri Jolivette Snagged a career-high nine rebounds against Montana Tech.
>>  Dae Dae Evans dished out a career-high four assists in the win over the Orediggers.
>> Emma Young recorded a career-high 10 points against Montana Tech.
>> Ashanti Plummer has scored in double figures in two games this year, including 10 points against Montana Tech.
>> Sydney-Anne Cottrell played the first minutes of her career against Montana Tech, draining her first two shots, recording the lone 3-pointer.
>> Dalesia Booth powered the offense against Montana Tech with 21 points, the most by a freshman since Brittany Mbamalu in 2013.
 
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
>> Panhandle State comes to the Coastal Bend in the midst of a three-game losing streak. They are 1-5 on the year.
>> After going over the 60-point threshold in the first two games of the year, the Aggies have yet to score more than 57 in any of the ensuing contests.
>> The lone win of the year for Panhandle State came in a 57-51 outing against Saint Gregory's on Nov. 18.
>> Denise Levine has a team-best 8.6 points per game, while Darby Price leads the team with an average of 7.6 points per game.
>> Panhandle State received an official invitation from the Sooner Athletic Conference last week, and will begin its transition back to NAIA next year.
