CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In his first action since joining Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, freshman
Gonzalo Achondo is on his way to the final round of the qualifying draw at the Harlingen Pro Futures.
In the second day of play, Achondo defeated Abhijeet Joshi, ranked top 20 in the U.S. Boys 18, in a back-and-forth three set duel to advance to Monday's final round of qualifying. The Islander rookie rallied after dropping the first set 4-6 to produce a pair of 6-4 sets in the win.
"This was a very impressive win for Gonzalo against a very high-caliber opponent," said Director of Tennis
Steve Moore. "That match was quite a battle and I'm very proud with how he represented the Islanders today."
Achondo now faces Julian Cash, who upended fellow Islander freshman
Cagatay Soke in the opening round Saturday, for the right to advance to the main draw. A sophomore at Oklahoma State, Cash transferred from Mississippi State where he earned All-America accolades as a freshman.

In the final day of competition in San Antonio,
Mitchell Cook and
Biyik Akinshemoyin highlighted the effort with singles wins.
Facing off with opponents from Southland rival University of the Incarnate Word, the two seniors notched straight set victories. Cook emerged victorious over Zachary Vander Heidan in a 7-5, 6-2 match as the Islander senior notched his first singles victory of the weekend.
Meanwhile, Akinshemoyin earned his victory over the Cardinals' Lissanevitch. The Islander rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win to cap off his weekend of singles action.
Akinshemoyin teamed with
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas to add a doubles win to Sunday's effort. The duo of Islanders defeated Lissanevitch and Vander Heidan from UIW, winning in thrilling 7-6 fashion.
Pedrosa Cuevas and
Paul Cook suffered singles defeats Sunday at the UTSA Cup. Cook fell to Sebastian Mortier while Pedrosa Cuevas dropped a three-setter to Francisco Bendana.
ROBINSON FAMILY ALUMNI MATCH TUESDAY
The Robinson Family Islander Alumni Match is set fro Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Admission is free and food will be provided for spectators.
