CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Opening a busy weekend for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis, the Islanders had a tough opening day at the UTSA Cup in San Antonio.
In doubles play to begin the morning, the Islanders picked up a win from
Paul Cook and
Mitchell Cook as the tandem defeated Borunda and King by a 7-5 score. In the Islanders' other three matches of doubles play, the Cooks along with the pairing of
Biyik Akinshemoyin and
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas fell in tight matches, two of which were 7-5.
The Islanders suffered a similar fate in singles action. Akinshemoyin dropped his singles match to Mauricio Del Rio of UT Arlington in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Pedrosa Cuevas also fell in straight sets to the Mavericks' Mario Muniesa with identical 6-3 sets.
Paul Cook battled in a tight 6-4 first set, but was upended 6-1 in the second to drop his Friday singles match to Daniel Armengol from UT Arlington. Finally,
Mitchell Cook fell in a pair 6-4 sets to Pablo Colvee, also from UT Arlington.
The quartet of Islanders continue play in the UTSA Cup while the trio of
Kevin Bettendroffer,
Cagatay Soke and
Gonzalo Achondo open play in the qualifying draw of the Harlingen Pro Futures. The 14-seed, Achondo will have a first round bye in the qualifiers.
