FRISCO, Texas – Sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team ran an opening-weekend offense that helped her come away with this year's first Southland Conference Setter of the Week honor, announced by the league office Monday.
Van Der Werff averaged a league-best 9.00 assists/set through three matches to open the season. She ran the Islanders' offense to a .237 hitting percentage and assisted on 99 of the team's 135 kills. Turning in an all-around performance, Van Der Werff additionally tallied 14 kills, 18 digs, and five service aces on the weekend.
"Virginia ran a very spread out and diverse offense throughout the opening weekend and got all of her hitters involved, showing success with a variety of attackers in addition to her ability to create her own kills and aces as well," said head coach
Steve Greene. "I couldn't be more proud of how far she's come as she has worked diligently to improve all spring and summer, and this honor is very well deserved."
It marks Van Der Werff's first career Setter of the Week award.
Van Der Werff and the Islanders will be back in action this Thursday and Friday when they head down to Edinburg to take on UTEP and Texas State in the Southwest Showdown.
