HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball came out the gate strong but ultimately fell 3-1 in a tight four-setter at Sam Houston Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Faith Panhans flirted with another triple double as she toed the line with nine kills, 31 assists, and 12 digs while
Rachel Young led the Islander attack with 14 kills.
The first period set the tone for the night as neither team led by more then three before the Islanders ripped the last four points bookended by a pair of Bearkat miscues to help A&M-Corpus Christi pull away late from the 25-20 win and match advantage.
A&M-Corpus Christi dug themselves out of three deficits to eventually overtake the narrow 23-22 late in the set off a Bearkat error and force home timeout. Sam Houston returned to the court reenergized, striking back-to-back kills and taking advantage of a visitor miscue to claim the final three points and even the match 1-1.
The third looked to follow a similar script, as the Islanders stayed on the Bearkats' heels until a visitor error sparked a decisive 10-0 unanswered outburst for the home club to run up a 25-11 tally and swap match leads.
Sam Houston took a 4-0 lead in the fourth and never looked back, as back-to-back kills from
Hannah Froeschl trimmed it to a two-point contest but the Islanders would get no closer as Sam Houston tallied six of the next nine points to take their fifth-straight Southland win.
The Islanders return to Dugan Wellness Center and face Houston Baptist Saturday, March 6 at 3 p.m.
