Islanders Blank McNeese for Third-Straight Sweep

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball continued its sweep streak, registering its third straight and seventh overall shutout in a 3-0 blanking of McNeese Thursday night at the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders found impressive performances on both offensive and defensive fronts, as Kylie Filipiak posted her fourth double-figure effort of the season with 13 kills while Carissa Barnes corralled 24 digs and Chloe Simon recorded a career-high six blocks.

A&M-Corpus Christi used a pair of 3-0 runs and six Cowgirl errors to seize an 11-5 edge out the gate, but McNeese continued to chip away until a 4-0 visitor run punctuated on an Islander miscue deadlocked the match 20-20 in the late stages. Both teams added another tally before a Julia Carter kill ignited a four-point stretch as Simon put away the set point to thwart the McNeese rally with a 25-21 victory.

Action remained close in the second, as both teams wagered eight ties before the Cowgirls broke free with two 3-0 runs of their own for a 15-11 lead, the largest margin of the set. The Islanders stormed back with an ensuing 7-1 spurt that saw back-to-back kills from Faith Panhans swing momentum to the home club, 19-17. Growing the advantage to 22-18 for the Islanders, it proved to be a game of runs down the stretch as McNeese ripped five straight to regain a 23-22 lead before kills from Simon and Filipiak alongside a Cowgirl error resulted in a 2-0 match lead.

The third followed a similar script, with neither team leading by more then two until a Kaylee Payne service ace pushed it to a 16-13 Islander advantage. After a McNeese kill drew it back to a two-point, 16-14 contest, the Islanders landed a 4-0 punch that ballooned the cushion to a six-point edge, 20-14. McNeese would get no closer then two the rest of the way as a Cowgirl attack error sealed the Islanders' sweep.

A&M-Corpus Christi wraps up the regular season hosting Lamar in a Saturday, March 27 matinee set for 1 p.m. inside Dugan Wellness Center.
