Islanders Bounce Lamar in Four Sets

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball downed Lamar 3-1 to claim its fourth-straight victory and conclude the regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon at the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders finished the four-setter with three players registering double-figure kills, as Montez Uigaese matched a career-high with 14 while Chloe Simon buried 11 and Hannah Froeschl rounded out the group with 10. Not to be outdone, Carissa Barnes flexed her defensive muscle with a career-high eight service aces that stands as an Islander record in a four-set match.

A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar traded the first four points before a Rachel Young kill sparked a 3-0 run that handed the home club a 5-2 lead that escalated to 13-8 at the midway point. The Cardinals drew within one on two occasions but the Islanders thwarted any comeback hopes with two kills from Uigaese for the 25-18 first-set win.

Both squads made it a back-and-forth affair in the second, with the set seeing seven ties as the Islanders played catch up after the Cardinals seized an early 6-3 edge. Froeschl's kill to even it 23-all provided the final Islander punch before Lamar rode to a narrow 25-23 victory after back-to-back kills from Abigale Nash.

The third saw all four ties coming in the opening eight points as both teams deadlocked 4-4 before a flurry of Cardinal errors contributed to a pair of 5-0 Islander outbursts that handed them a cushy 17-8 lead. Lamar trimmed the deficit to three in the late stages but Uigaese came away with another set point to give the home club a 25-21 win and match lead.

Four-straight Cardinal errors set the tone for the final stanza, as the Islanders rolled to a 18-4 advantage highlighted by five service aces from Barnes during a 9-0 run. Lamar failed to answer the Islander attack charge, as a Julia Carter kill signaled match point and the Islanders' fourth-straight victory.

A&M-Corpus Christi plays host site of the Southland Conference Volleyball Championships, as the Islanders enter as the No. 4 seed and will play the No. 5/No. 8 winner on Thursday, April 1.
