NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball capped its regular-season road slate in triumphant fashion, as the Islanders registered its sixth shutout of the season and claimed a Southland tournament berth in a 3-0 sweep over New Orleans Saturday afternoon at Human Performance Center.
A&M-Corpus Christi started hot firing a 0.519 attack percentage while limiting the Privateers to a -0.136 that resulted in only seven points for the home club. The Islanders rode multiple runs and tallied 14 kills with no errors to the overwhelming 25-7 set win, marking an opponent season-low point total.
The second proved closer than its predecessor, as New Orleans fought back from a 4-0 deficit to eventually tie it 9-9 on a service ace and again at 12-12 midway point via a kill from Kai Williams. The Islanders reclaimed the advantage for good on its own 6-1 run as the home squad proved unable to trim the lead to less than two the rest of the way.
The Islanders returned to its powerhouse ways in the final stanza, as a 6-0 run capped by
Carissa Barnes' fourth service ace of the afternoon signaled a 19-7, double-figure margin that stood through match point.
This marked the Islanders' second-straight 3-0 decision and sixth overall this spring.
Dynamic duo
Rachel Young and
Chloe Simon registered 10 kills apiece while defensive standout Barnes reached a season-high four service aces for the third time this season and chipped in 20 digs.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Dugan Wellness Center for a two-match home stand beginning with McNeese on Thursday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m.
