AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball played No. 2 Texas close in all three sets but ended on the wrong side as the Longhorns clinched a 3-0 sweep over the Islanders Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Center.
A pair of Texas miscues handed A&M-Corpus Christi its first lead of the set, as both teams made it a back-and-forth affair with nine ties and four lead changes. The Islanders played catch up after the midway point as Texas maintained a steady advantage before punctuating the first-set win with four straight kills and ending it 25-18.
The second act followed a similar narrative, as once again the programs saw the score leveled on nine occasions. After Texas took the 12-11 edge on an Islander error, the visiting club managed to cut the deficit to two multiple times in the latter half but the advantage proved too much to overcome as the Longhorns won 25-20 for the 2-0 match lead.
Hitting a game-high 0.471 and logging 17 kills in the third, the Islanders saved its best offensive effort for last as they took the Longhorns down to the wire for a third-straight set. The Islanders battled back from an 11-5 margin, getting no closer than three after a 4-0 run drew it to 24-21 before a Melanie Parra kill finalized the Longhorns' sweep and capped their 19
th-straight win.
Chloe Simon led the way with 10 kills while reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week
Carissa Barnes tallied 18 digs.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Southland play Thursday, March 18 at Nicholls.
