SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball fended off a late Incarnate Word rally to top the Cardinals 3-1 and earn its fourth-straight league victory Thursday evening at the McDermott Center.
Faith Panhans' triple-double highlighted the road outing as she finished with 13 kills, 43 assists, and 11 digs under her belt.
Rachel Young paced the Islander attack with 16 on the night as she recorded her sixth double-figure kill total of the season. Defensively, four Islanders amassed double-figure digs but
Carissa Barnes led the pack with 13. and two service aces.
Five-straight points opened competition for the Islanders, as the visiting club made quick work of the Cardinals by adding another 7-1 run off of kills from three different A&M-Corpus Christi attackers to claim a sizable 18-9 lead in the first. UIW got no closer than six points the rest of the way before a
Julia Carter kill eliminated any rally chance and handed the Islanders the 25-18 first-set win.
Holding UIW to a -0.025 hitting percentage and nine points in the second period, the Islanders pulled away early with an 8-0 stretch before finishing off the opposition with another lethal eight unanswered points to seize the 2-0 match lead.
The final two frames proved different from the first, as both teams traded leads in a see-saw battle that saw 15 ties and 7 lead changes. A kill from
Julia Carter and a Cardinal attack error gave the Islanders their final 21-20 edge before a decisive 5-0 home club outburst sent this one to a fourth set.
Carrying the tone from the third, neither team lead by more than four points throughout the duration of the set. UIW dug out of a late three-point hole to even it 19-all thanks to three consecutive kills from star attacker Bethany Clapp, but A&M-Corpus Christi got crucial kills from Young and Panhans to retake the lead and withstand a final Cardinal push for the 25-23 decisive set win.
The Islanders return to Dugan Wellness Center and face Southeastern Louisiana Saturday, Feb. 27 in a 1 p.m. match.
