Islanders Claim Sweep Over Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball set the tone early with a dominating first set and never looked back as the Islanders rolled to a 3-0 straight-set decision in Southland action over Northwestern State Thursday evening at Prather Coliseum.

Kylie Filipiak led the Islanders' offensive charge with 12 kills as Rachel Young chipped in eight and recorded a pair of blocks.

After a pair of kills by Audrey Quesnel gave the Lady Demons a 2-1 edge, the Islanders ripped seven-straight points followed by another 5-0 outburst to build a comfortable 13-3 cushion in the first set. NSU got no closer then five points the rest of the way, as a Lady Demon service error kickstarted an A&M-Corpus Christi spurt that ended with a pair of Carissa Barnes aces to seal the 25-13 win in dominant fashion.

Both clubs traded blows to begin the second stanza, as Quesnel once again handed the Lady Demons a lead that the Islanders quickly squashed with a 7-0 streak that included critical kills from Chloe Simon and Young. NSU tried to cobble together a comeback as a Reagan Lee kill clipped the edge to three before the Islanders' offense shut down the rally and claimed the 25-18 set with four-straight points.

The third proved to be a nip-and-tuck affair as both squads swapped early points in a set that would see eight ties and four lead changes. A late 6-1 Lady Demon charge put the Islanders on alert but they answered in style with five points of their own, including back-to-back Filipiak kills, to claim the final lead switch and the road sweep.

Haley Hoang paced NSU with 19 digs while four Lady Demons tallied a team-high six kills.

Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi continues the road tour on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Central Arkansas slated for a 12 p.m. first serve.
