Islanders Earn Third-Consecutive SLC Title

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis remained on the road, traveling to Natchitoches to take on Northwestern State in the regular season finale. In a four-hour battle, the Islanders showed heart and grit, earning a 4-3 victory over the Lady Demons to secure their third-consecutive Southland Conference Title! This marks the the 22nd SLC Title for Islanders Tennis, both regular season and tournament, in the last 12 years!

Northwestern State came out strong, picking up the doubles point to start the match. But, the Islanders continued to battle. With the deciding point at No. 3 singles tied 4-4 in the third set, Luna Dormet pushed through, securing the final point to earn the hard-fought comeback win!

"This is one of the best college matches I've ever been a part of," said Coach Steve Moore. "Both teams truly deserved to win. Last match on, 4-4 in the third set. It just doesn't get any better and closer.  Northwestern State in Natchitoches is the toughest challenge you can face. This is the toughest place to play in the conference, against one of the toughest and most well-coached teams."

"This wasn't about tennis after four hours," Moore continued, "rather grit, heart, character and team unity. They truly fought for each other. I can't say enough about the toughness and heart of these girls. They were down for most of four hours, and just kept fighting. They just rose up. I'm so proud of them for all the adversity they overcame this year to win their third-consecutive Southland Conference Title!"

In just under a week, the Islander women travel to Beaumont, Texas to compete in the Southland Conference tournament. The tournament will take place between Friday, April 27 and Sunday, April 29.
