Islanders Close Final Round In Second

The Blue and Green take second at this year's UTRGV Invitational, tallying a pair of points in the South Texas Showdown

MCALLEN, Texas - Led by a fifth place individual performance from Autumn Bynum, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished second at this year's UTRGV Invitational on the way to earning another two points in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. The Blue and Green's final team score of 905 is the team's second lowest three-round total in the past five years.

After tallying her first hole in one the previous day, Bynum shot a 76 in round three to finish this year's competition at 10 over par. The Islander sophomore recorded a trio of birdies on Tuesday to finish in a tie for fifth, with just three golfers from Texas State and a single competitor from Sam Houston finishing ahead of the Montgomery native.

Alex Amos rebounded from her second round with a 78 on Tuesday, to tie with senior Julia Derinewsky for 15th. Dani Bergmann and Brooklyn Sutton round out the Blue and Green five, tying for 18th overall. The latter pair recorded three birdies each on the day two, to tally rounds of 77 and 78 respectively and finish 18-over for the entirety of the competition.

Corpus Christi was the only team at the UTRGV Invitational to place all five of their golfer's in the top-20 during the two-day tournament, beating Southland opponents Sam Houston State, McNeese State and Incarnate Word. The Islanders were a dozen strokes better than their hosting rival UTRGV, securing a pair of points in this year's South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union and knotting this year's standings at 20.5 points apiece.
