MCALLEN, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is well on their way towards their best finish of the season, after completing day one of the UTRGV Invitational in second place. With a team stroke-count of 596, the Islanders have tied their best start to an invite in six years, as sophomore
Autumn Bynum tallied a hole in one, on hole number 13 during round one.Â
Shooting one stroke under par in the first round,
Autumn Bynum remained tied for first place after the opening 18 holes of Monday's competition. Bynum finished her day tied for fifth at 147 strokes, sitting just six off Texas State's Anne-Charlotte Mora for the tournament lead. In addition to her par three hole in one, Bynum shot another pair of birdies over her two rounds, as the sophomore is well on her way to one of her best performances of the season, with the opportunity to reach a career-low with three under par or better on Tuesday.
Sitting in seventh currently, senior
Julia Dereniwsky completed her two rounds on just 149 strokes after completing one of the best performances of the afternoon 18. Dereniwsky was one of just three players to shoot better than 73 on the afternoon, tying her best performance in a single round.
Alex Amos rounded out the Islanders' top-three on the day, finishing just behind Derniwsky in eighth. Her 152 strokes tie her lowest score of the season over 36 holes, as her first round par was the second-lowest first round of the morning.Â
Brooklyn Sutton and
Dani Bergmann finished 13th and 19th respectively this Monday, as the Islanders and Texas State remain the only two teams in the UTRGVÂ Invitational to put all five of their competitors inside the top-20 individually.
Corpus Christi concludes its week in McAllen, Texas, with round three set for a shotgun start at 8:30 AM this Tuesday morning. Bynum will be grouped alongside field leader Mora for this week's final set of 18, as the two race for the top spot in the contest.
