CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis closed out a big conference weekend today, hosting Sam Houston State in their third conference match of the season. With a great team effort through singles and doubles play, the Islanders battled throughout the match to secure a 4-3 victory over the Bearkats.
"What a battle," said Coach Steve Moore. "What a great college tennis match. I could talk forever about how much respect I have for what Coach Rob Hubbard has done at Sam Houston. That's just a high-level team. Our conference is a dog fight every week. You just have to bring it. You have to keep fighting, go through the valleys, and stay tough. When you slip up, you've got to stay in the present, get back up, grab your axe, and chop wood. You've just got to keep chopping wood and believing."
"I'm so proud of Louise," Moore continued, "Hortense, Jelena, Marina, and this entire team of high-character fighters. They've battled with injuries, and just showed up today with so much heart and courage. They fought as hard as a coach can ask. I'm really, really proud of this team today. They beat a great team the hard way – with heart, guts, and character."
The Islanders have lost only one Southland Conference match in the last 3 years. With today's win, the women improve to 31-1 throughout that time span. This win also brings Coach Moore one match closer to the 400 career-wins mark, currently sitting at 394.
When asked about approaching that milestone, Moore stated, "The present is all that matters. I can't tell you how many of those matches were won 4-3 by simply being the tougher dog in that dog fight. The minute a player loses that superior fight and tenacity, the whole thing collapses. People talk so much about different things in sports. But, nothing matters more than having superior grit and outfighting your opponent."
