CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi posted a third-place finish in this week's home tournament, posting a stroke total of 923 over three rounds of this year's Islander Classic.
After tallying the best score of the invitational during round two, the Islanders entered this Tuesday sitting second in a field of 11, just three strokes off of leaders Saint Mary's. As she has done so often this year, sophomore
Autumn Bynum posted the Islanders' top performance of day two, going five-over in round three. The Montgomery, Texas native came within a stroke of her personal best with a 69 in round two, on the way to finishing this week's competition with an overall stroke count of 224.Â
Bynum's eight-over was good enough for third place at Corpus Christi Country Club, while teammate
Dani Bergmann came in a tie for seventh at 11-over. Bergmann's 70 strokes in round two set a personal record for the junior, while Brookly Sutton closed out the week with her best 18 of the tournament (78). All five Blue and Green golfers finished within the top-38 in Corpus Christi, one of just three teams to accomplish that feat this week.
The Islanders would close the afternoon in third as a team, matching their finish from the previous season's Islander Classic and posting their best tournament ranking of the 2017-18 campaign. At the conclusion of Tuesday's round, the Blue and Green trailed only Sam Houston State and St. Mary's for first place, coming in ahead of SLC opponents Houston Baptist (924), Lamar (933) and Incarnate Word (959). The Islanders scored a full five strokes better than South Texas Showdown rival UTRGV, pulling back a pair of points in this season's ongoing rivalry.
COMING UP NEXT
Corpus Christi will head down to McAllen, Texas to compete in the UTRGVÂ Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, after claiming seventh in the same event the previous year. The Blue and Green will be competing on a par-71 McAllen Country Club Course that stretches 5,628 yards, golfing three rounds of 18 holes, over two days.
