Record round for Islanders at Sam Houston State

MAGNOLIA, Texas - The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi golf team set a single round, 18-hole record on Tuesday during the final round of the Sam Houston State Bearkat Women's Invitational. The Islanders, who finished the tournament in fourth place, fired a 288 in the final round, the lowest 18-hole total in program history. It tied Lamar for the lowest score of the third round and was tied for the second-lowest round shot by any team during the tournament.

"Today was a great day of golf," said head coach Joni Stephens. "I am really proud of this team. They showed a lot of composure and grit and they made some crucial putts for par and dropped some needed birdie putts. They really fought all day to keep the round going. It is always a good day when you throw a 75 awa for your high score."

Autumn Bynum shot a 68 in the third round to move up 11 spots on the leader board to finish sixth individually. The 68 is tied for the second-lowest round in program history, a mark she posted during the second round of the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational last year. Vanessa Johnson's second round of 67 back in 2013 at the Pat Bradley Invitational stands as the lowest 18-hole total in school history.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 54 hole total of 893 is the second lowest total in program history. The school record of 889 was shot during the 2012-13 season at the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational.

Dani Bergmann shot a 75 on Tuesday and finished in seventh place overall. Kellsey Sample improved by four strokes, firing an even-par 72. She moved up 11 spots and finished in a tie for 16th. Brooklyn Sutton finished in a tie for 19th after a third-round 73, her lowest round of the tournament. Alex Amos moved up 10 spots individually to finish in a tie for 43rd. She shot a final round 75.

The tournament was played at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas, and featured 14 teams and 75 individuals. Sam Houston State won the event by seven strokes over Lamar. Houston Baptist's Kaity Cummings won the event at -3 (213).
