CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Returning home after a long week on the road, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team hosts McNeese for a three-game set this weekend at Chapman Field. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1&3 p.m., before the series finale on Saturday at noon.
The Islanders (6-23, 1-8) dropped three contests to Abilene Christian last weekend.
Savannah Sandoval hit .300 in the series, including the first triple of her career.
Mackinzee Griebel drove in the lone RBI on the weekend for the Blue and Green.
Liz Carter and
Kandace Johnson combined to strike out 18 batters.
Carter climbed up to 69th in the country in strikeouts with 96 on the year. The Austin native has the conference lead in punchouts with 40 in league play.
Carter continues to lead the Islanders in RBI with six this season, followed by Johnson and
Aspen Auger with five. Nine players have driven in a run this year. Freshman
Lacey Boyd has a team-leading .444 slugging percentage, aided by a triple and a pair of home runs.
McNeese (25-13, 11-1) is tied at the top of the Southland Conference standings with Abilene Christian. The Cowgirls' offense ranks first in 12 league categories, including runs scored and home runs. 2016 SLC Hitter of the Year Erika Piancastelli has a .521 on-base percentage and a .602 slugging percentage, which ranks first and fourth in the league, respectively. In the circle, a trio of pitchers has carried the load in conference action with a staff ERA of 1.11.
