Islanders Face Houston Baptist at Chapman Field

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Fresh off a commanding 5-0 win over UTSA on Tuesday, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team continues its four-game homestand this weekend with a Southland Conference series against Houston Baptist. The three-game set is slated for 1&3 p.m. on Friday with a noon first pitch on Saturday. All three games will be broadcast on the Islanders Digital Network.

The Islanders (8-28, 2-13) jumped out to an early lead against the Roadrunners, as Kandace Johnson notched a two-RBI double before Aspen Auger's RBI double to right to put the Blue and Green up 3-0 in the first inning. Megan Mitchell and Candice Hadd added runs in the third and sixth innings, respectively.

Liz Carter (7-14) had one of her best performances of the season in the circle. After giving up just two earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over the weekend at Sam Houston State, the Austin native struck out 11 in the three-hit shutout over the Roadrunners. Carter ranks third in the Southland Conference with 122 punchouts this season and leads the league in sending batters down looking with 38.

Johnson and Auger are tied for the team lead with eight RBI this season. Over the last 10 games, freshman Lexi Shaw has hit .318 at the plate with a pair of runs.

Corpus Christi squares off with the Huskies (13-21, 4-14) with a healthy 19-9 series lead, including a 12-4 mark at Chapman Field, entering this weekend. The two clubs split two games in a rain-shortened series in 2016. Carter tossed a three-hitter in the Islanders 1-0 win, fanning 11. The Blue and Green tallied the lone run of the game on a double steal.

The Huskies sit 10th in the conference standings after dropping two of three to Stephen F. Austin. Cecilia Bauer's .333 clip at the plate leads the team as four players are hitting over .300 entering the weekend series. Emily Mueller has had the lion's share of work in the circle with a 7-14 record in 20 starts, as the Huskies' staff has a combined ERA of 4.68.
