CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team returns to the diamond this weekend with a three-game series at Sam Houston State. Friday's doubleheader will be broadcasted on ESPN3 starting at 3 and 5 p.m., before Saturday's series finale at 3 p.m.

The Islanders (6-26, 1-11) squared off with the Southland Conference leader McNeese last weekend. The Cowgirls edged the Blue and Green in all three contests.
Lexi Shaw extended her hitting streak out to four games in a row by hitting .571 on the weekend. Freshman
Kandace Johnson tossed 10 1/3 innings through the three games, the most she has pitched in a conference series.

Savannah Sandoval continues to lead the team in league play with a .320 batting average. The Magnolia native also has a team-high four runs scored in conference action.Â
Lacey Boyd and
Mackinzee Griebel are hitting .318 and .301, respectively. In nine games back from injury, Griebel has a .296 clip at the plate with an RBI.

Liz Carter ranks 82nd in the nation with 102 strikeouts, becoming just the second player in program history to notch more 100 punchouts in four seasons, following Sarah Pauly, who fanned more than 250 batters during her four years on the Island. Carter also ranks second with 46 punchouts in league play.

The Islanders face the Bearkats (16-20, 7-8) to start the second half of the conference season. Sam Houston State holds a 19-23 over Corpus Christi in series record, along with an 8-5 mark in Huntsville. The Blue and Green took one game from the three-game series at Chapman Field last year.

The Bearkats are fifth in the Southland Conference standings after dropping two of three to Lamar last weekend. Tori Koerselman ranks fourth in the league with a .342 clip at the plate, while Tiffany Thompson has the team lead with 17 RBI. Tayler Atkinson and Lindsey McLeod have carried the load in the circle through conference action with 82 2/3 innings of work, as the staff has posted a 3.69 ERA this season.
