CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Returning to the Island for its Southland Conference home opener, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team is set for a three-game series with Northwestern State this weekend at Chapman Field. The Islanders open the slate with a doubleheader on Friday at 1&3 p.m., before a noon first pitch on Saturday.
The Blue and Green (5-18, 0-3) arrive back to Chapman Field after dropping three games to Southeastern Louisiana last weekend to open up league action.
Alexis Richardson hit .500 through three games, while
Lexi Shaw drove in a pair of runs.
Aspen Auger notched her first home run of the season in the series opener.
Mariah Clay recorded her first career multi-hit game in the series finale.
Liz Carter fell on the wrong side of two decisions, despite surrendering four earned runs and striking out 15 in the process. The Austin native jumped up to fourth in the league with 71 punchouts on the campaign.
Lacey Boyd continues to lead the team at the plate at .327, followed by
Mackinzee Griebel at .304. Carter tallied her team-leading sixth RBI of the season with
Kandace Johnson in second with five.
After not meeting during the 2016 campaign, the Islanders and Lady Demons (11-19-1, 1-5) will meet for the 28th time after Sunday's contest. The Islanders lead the all-time series 14-11 with a 7-3 mark in the Coastal Bend.
Northwestern State is ninth in the league through six games with its lone win coming in the series finale against Abilene Christian last weekend. Julie Rawls leads the team with a .333 batting average as the only player over .300.
Kellye Kincannon ranks third in the conference with 25 RBI and is third in home runs with seven. The Lady Demons have used three starting pitchers this season and has posted a staff ERA of 5.29.
