CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For the first time since 2015, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis dropped a Southland Conference match as Lamar snapped a 15-match streak with a hard-fought 4-3 win Saturday afternoon in Beaumont.
Â
"Congrats to Lamar and coach Dave Wong," said Director of Tennis
Steve Moore. "They won a hard and tough fought match. They played very well and I respect the way they competed today. I was proud of a lot of the things we did today. We competed very hard, but what we did not have today was the vital combination of competing extremely hard and extremely smart every point.
Â
"The second part was missing today and it cost us," continued Moore. "This team has tremendous character, we will regroup, make adjustments and we will get that combination of playing hard and smart back. I believe in this group, their character and I'm excited for the rest of the season."
Â
Lamar (8-4, 2-1) snagged an early advantage with the doubles point, winning on courts one and three. The Islanders (8-2, 2-1) pairing of
Louise Trigona and
Marina Vicens Miquel won in 6-3 fashion at the second spot, but the Cardinals claimed the other two courts in identical fashion.
Â
The Islanders rallied back in singles play, quickly taking a 2-1 lead before the match eventually reached a 3-3 tie. Trigona provided a strong showing at number four, winning in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-1 score over Talisa Merchiers.
Â
Marina Vicens Miquel also picked up a straight set victory for the Islanders. Playing at number six, the sophomore defeated Elfving 6-2, 6-4 to give the Blue and Green another point.
Â
The Islanders final point came from
Jelena Dzinic at the second spot in the lineup. Dzinic knocked off Anna Spengler 7-5, 6-4 for the Islanders' third point of the day.
Â
It was not enough, however, as A&M-Corpus Christi's comeback bid fell short at Lamar. The Cardinals used two, three-set victories to hold off the Islanders in singles play.
Â
Hortense Boscher fell in a back-and-forth three-set bout to Katya Lapayeva 6-4, 1-6, 2-6. At the third spot,
Judit Vives fell in a nail-biter as Jasmin Buchta held off Vives 4-6, 7-6 (5), 5-7 to give Lamar the victory.
Maria Maldonado suffered a 6-4, 6-1 setback in the fifth spot.
