DALLAS – After 25 consecutive regular season victories, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi suffered its first loss of the season and first regular season loss since 2015 as undefeated SMU snapped the streak with a 6-1 victory.
Â
The 25-match winning streak was the longest regular season streak in all of NCAA Division I tennis.
Â
Freshman
Maria Maldonado picked up a straight-sets victory at the number five singles slot, but it was not enough for the Islanders to rally back on the road. Maldonado defeated Ellie Zogg 7-6, 6-0 to improve to 5-0 in singles play.
Â
The Mustangs (6-0) claimed the doubles point to jump out to a fast start. The Mustangs took a 6-0 victory at number two as the Islanders (4-1) shook up their doubles pairings. SMU clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 as
Louise Trigona and
Marina Vicens Miquel fell for the Islanders.
Â
In singles play, SMU used wins at the one, four and six spots to clinch the win.
Hortense Boscher dropped at the top spot by a 6-1, 6-0 score to Liza Buss. The Mustangs then made it a 3-0 advantage behind a win at four as
Louise Trigona fell 6-4, 6-0 to Dasha Sharapova.
Â
That's when Maldonado picked up her win at five, but SMU answered with the match-clinching point at number six.
Â
Marina Vicens Miquel fell 6-3, 7-5 at six and
Jelena Dzinic dropper an identical score at the two spot to end the match.

MOORE'S TAKE
Â
On tonight's match…
"I give great credit to SMU tonight. They've got a great team this year, they're undefeated and they were tough as nails today at home. I really salute our girls for what they've done in accomplishing something historic like this streak. It's not the result that makes me proud as much as the root reason behind it: showing up to play every match hard and smart with no excuses. They always fight for each other like a family. That's why I'm very, very proud of them."
Â
On the season to come…
It's those root reasons: the character they play with, the fact they always show up to play hard and that they always fight for each other like a family that makes me excited beyond words for the rest of this season. I think they have great things ahead of them. The hot, windy, fitness and footwork part of the season is yet to come and that is when we are at our best. We'll keep working hard, keep getting better and stay unified as a family. Go Islanders!"
