Shaw Returns to Island as Assistant Coach

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball standout Jasmine Shaw has been named as an assistant coach to head coach Royce Chadwick's staff. Shaw returns to the Island after her redshirt senior season in 2013-14, which saw her earn the Islanders first Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year laurels.

"We are very excited to bring a former Islander player back into the fold," Chadwick said. "Jasmine will be a great addition to our staff. She was a tremendous leader during her playing career, and is revered by her former teammates.

"She will be able to communicate with our players on a higher level with her energy and enthusiasm. She knows what it takes to develop talent, as she was a self-made All-Southland player. "

Shaw powered the Blue and Green in her redshirt senior season, amassing a team-high and school career-record 15.3 points per game in her lone year on the Island. A starter in 29 of the 30 games she played in, Shaw tallied five rebounds and 2.5 assists per game with an average of 1.5 takeaways a night.

Leading the Islanders to a 16-14 record and their first berth in the Southland Conference Tournament since the 2009-10 campaign, Shaw was instrumental in Chadwick's second Southland Conference Coach of the Year award.

Her 2013-14 season ranks as one of the best single-year performances in school history. Shaw finished third in points with 458, fifth in scoring average with 15.3, sixth and ninth in field goals made and attempted, fourth in 3-point percentage and first in efficiency at the charity stripe with a .870 clip.

Prior to her time on the Island, Shaw played two seasons at Marshall, with her sophomore season under the guidance of coach Chadwick. As a member of the Thundering Herd for two seasons, Shaw averaged six points per game in 31 appearances with five starts.

Shaw earned All-American and All-Pandhandle Conference and Freshman of the Year honors during her two years at Chipola Junior College prior to her time at Marshall. Shaw tallied 15.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game while playing for the Lady Indians.

"I am beyond grateful to be added as a coach to the Islanders staff," said Shaw. "It is an absolute honor for me to coach along side Coach Chadwick. I had the privilege to learn his basketball philosophy as a player, and I am excited to learn more of his knowledge as someone on his elite coaching staff.

"Corpus Christi has become a home away from home for me and I'm eager to work with Coach Chadwick and the players, as a first-time college coach with Texas A&M Corpus Christi."

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shaw earned her associate degree in recreation science from Chipola, before receiving her bachelor's degree in business management from Marshall. When she returns to the Island, Shaw will continue to pursue her master's degree in counseling, which she started during her lone year representing the Islanders.

As a member of coaching staff, Shaw will be responsible for recruiting, team travel and coaching the guards.
