Katie Porter of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team received some much-deserved recognition on Tuesday, as it was announced by the league office that she was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the period of August 25-31.
Porter, a forward from Tampa, Florida, kept her fantastic start to the 2026 season going last week, scoring goals in both of the Islanders' matches to help them continue their program record five-game unbeaten streak to begin the year. She first got things going last Thursday against Sam Houston, stepping up to the penalty spot in the seventh minute and banging her try home to give the team its lone goal in what ended up being a 1-1 draw with the Bearkats. She then followed this up by scoring again on Sunday against Our Lady of the Lake, coming on as a reserve and finding the back of the net after just two minutes on the pitch to get the Islanders going on offense in an eventual 2-1 victory that completed their historic homestand.
"We are all really proud of Katie for this achievement," Islanders head coach
Daniel Clitnovici said. "She has been a consistent performer this season, and we hope she continues to score goals and lead our program in the fashion that she has done so already."
These performances helped Porter continue what has been arguably the best opening to a season for any A&M-Corpus Christi player in program history, as she has scored in all five matches that the team has played so far while also pitching in a pair of assists for good measure. Her 12 points already outplace the Islanders' leading scorer throughout the entirety of the 2025 campaign, and it has doubled up her career total of six coming into the year, which she accumulated across 51 matches and more than 2300 total minutes during her first three years of school. As far as the Southland Conference is concerned, Porter has either sole or partial possession of the top spot in many different categories so far, including goals, total points and points per game (2.40).
For the Islanders, Porter is the first player this year to earn a weekly conference honor, and the first of any kind since
Ashley Wilson took home the final SLC Defensive Player of the Week of the 2025 season. For SLC Offensive Player of the Week, she is the most recent for the team since
Cilia Leal Cardona earned the award back on August 26 of last year.
"It goes without saying that without a strong team behind Katie, none of this would be possible," Clitnovici said. "Our team this season has focused on being a good team rather than a group of individual players, and Katie will be the first one to tell you that she is grateful for the award, but her team has also contributed for success."
Porter and the rest of the Islanders will look to keep rolling in their first road trip of the season this week, heading west to California to start a two-game swing against CSU Bakersfield on Thursday at 9 p.m. CT.
