BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team continues with the back half of its conference schedule this week, starting off on the road with a showdown against Lamar on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Islanders (4-7-4, 1-4-2 SLC) were last in action last Thursday, when a goal from
Ashley Wilson early in the second half helped them secure a 1-1 draw with East Texas A&M in Commerce. This result added one more point to their total in the Southland standings, giving them five with three matches left to play. The current mark for the last spot in the conference tournament sits at 10 from Southeastern Louisiana, a team the blue and green holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over.
Looking to make up this ground, A&M-Corpus Christi faces a tough test in the Cardinals (7-2-4, 4-1-1 SLC), who currently lead the conference with 13 total points and come into play riding a three-game winning streak after dispatching East Texas A&M, Stephen F. Austin and UIW. Lamar boasts the stingiest defense in the league, allowing just 10 goals all season with a backline anchored by two-time SLC Goalkeeper of the Week Keely Thomas and her 0.51 goals against average. On offense, Marissa Gross sits in a three-way tie for the conference lead in goals with eight, one ahead of
Katie Porter's current mark of seven.
In the matchup between the two schools, the Islanders have had some success against Lamar as of late, most recently securing a wild 3-2 victory in Corpus Christi on October 2 of last year behind goals from returners
Vanessa Wimbish and
Dakota Merino. They also won the previous meeting before this as well, which came in the first round of the 2024 Southland Conference Soccer Championship at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
