CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team was handed a heartbreaking loss in its final home match of the 2026 season on Sunday afternoon, coming just a few minutes away from securing a point but surrendering at the death and falling to Houston Christian by a final of 1-0.
The match ended up being a defensive showdown for much of the day, with the Islanders (4-9-4, 1-6-2 SLC) getting off eight shots in total over the 90 minutes and the Huskies (8-3-6, 4-0-4 SLC) attempting 10 for a combined tally of just 18 between the two squads. A&M-Corpus Christi also attempted one less corner kick than HCU by a mark of 4-3, but it did draw more fouls, resulting in a 12-9 edge in free kicks.
Despite being held scoreless on the day, the Islanders had the first prime opportunity of the day for either side, narrowly missing their chance to jump on the board in the seventh minute when
Natalie Taylor found her way into the box with the ball after a bad HCU touch but sent her shot just over the crossbar. They would then get another promising opportunity as the clock wound down, with
Jenna Largent receiving a short pass on a corner and sending a deep shot on net that forced a punch out from Huskies keeper Emmy McKeon. The blue and green were not able to corral the rebound, though, bringing things to the break still with no score.
A&M-Corpus Christi would start out the second half trying to ramp up the offense again with a long range try from
Katie Porter right after play resulted, but after this, the pace of play slowed down, with the two combining for just one shot apiece over the next half hour of action. As things progressed to the home stretch, HCU found a bit of a rhythm but were stifled by some excellent work from keeper
Addie Brown, who came up with three key saves to keep the match all knotted up. The last of these was the best of them all, with the freshman sprawling out to keep a high velocity try from Madison Stormberg in the box out of the net with just six minutes and chance left to go.
Unfortunately for the Islanders, though, they could not keep the Huskies from breaking through, as with just 79 seconds left on the clock, Jasmine Diaz sent in a rocket from outside the box past a diving Brown to put the hosts down 1-0. With so little time left on the clock, they were unable to spark up one last rally and took home the tough defeat as a result.
The late goal put a damper on what was an otherwise strong day from Brown, who tallied six saves in total with many different key stops to keep A&M-Corpus Christi in the match. On offense, Largent and
Emmie Barton had the team's two shots on goal, while Porter was the lone player to record multiple shots of any kind.
The Islanders will now conclude 2026 on the road, playing their final match of the year in Thibodaux against Nicholls next Sunday at noon.
