CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team plays in its most important series of the season to date over the weekend, hosting Houston Christian at Chapman Field for three games with big postseason implications toward the Southland Conference Baseball Championship.
The Islanders (22-22, 10-14 SLC) enter play tied with the Huskies (19-24, 10-14 SLC) for eighth place in the current conference standings, which represents the final qualifier for the conference tournament that starts in just two weeks' time. Both squads also sit a game behind seventh-place McNeese, who A&M-Corpus Christi holds the tiebreaker over thanks to its series victory over the Cowboys back on April 17-19.
A&M-Corpus Christi has started to peak at the right time, sweeping UIW in a three-game series in San Antonio last weekend before then going back on the road to San Marcos and knocking off a Texas State team that had been ranked No. 37 in the nation in the NCAA RPI rankings before that contest. Seven Islander arms combined to hold the Bobcats to just two runs on four hits in this contest, and
Hunter Azemar had the big swing with a two-run homer in the third for his second in as many games.
Christian Smith-Johnson also comes in as the reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, earning the award after posting a 1.571 OPS with two home runs, eight RBIs, seven runs scored and three stolen bases against the Cardinals.
This weekend will also represent a chance for the Islanders to get back on the positive side of the ledger against HCU, as they have not won a series against the reigning Southland Conference champions since the 2023 season despite holding the advantage all-time with a record of 22-15. The Huskies are coming off a big 12-2 midweek victory over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, which helped them get back on track after they were swept by Southeastern Louisiana in conference play over the weekend. They are led in the lineup by outfielder Jack Walker, who paces qualified members of the squad in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS while also adding four homers and 28 RBIs. On the mound, David Lopez comes in holding a 3.59 ERA in 11 appearances and 10 starts while punching out 60 hitters in just 42.2 innings.
