CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Senior
Chase Mayer of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team earned the eyes of the national collegiate landscape this week, as Baseball America listed the lefty as one of their 10 Seniors with Breakout Potential for the upcoming 2027 season.
Mayer, a native of Amherst, Ohio, is entering his second year with the Islanders after becoming the team's most reliable arm in his debut 2026 campaign, posting a 3.57 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 45.1 innings across 14 appearances while striking out 53 batters and walking just 16. He started the season coming out of the bullpen, pitching his first nine games in relief and excelling to the tune of a 2.16 ERA in 16.2 innings with three saves. The last two of these both came in A&M-Corpus Christi's series victory over rival UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, earning him the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week Award on March 30.
After this, Mayer was inserted into A&M-Corpus Christi's rotation, where he made five starts to close out the year. As a starter, he posted a solid 4.40 ERA while working at least five innings in all but one outing, mixed in with which was an 11-strikeout showing against McNeese that was the most by any Islanders pitcher in a game since John Gaddis punched out 13 nearly five years earlier on May 26, 2021.
"Mayer is a deeper breakout bet because the arsenal still needs more power to keep climbing. But the fastball already misses bats at an unusual rate for its velocity, and a clearer path into the rotation gives him considerably more runway as a senior," BA wrote. "If the stuff takes even a modest step forward, there is enough here for that late-season starting glimpse to become something much more substantial in 2027."
"Everyone in our program is super proud of Chase," Islanders head coach
Scott Malone said. "He was one of our first four-year transfers from the portal. Chase's work ethic combined with our player development has taken Chase's talent to the next level. We expect him to be one of the frontline starting pitchers in the Southland Conference."
