CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team makes its long-awaited return home this weekend, coming back to Chapman Field for the first time in nearly two weeks to take on conference foe McNeese for a three-game series that begins on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Islanders (16-20, 5-12 SLC) most recently wrapped up a six-game road trip on Tuesday in Austin against No. 4 Texas, jumping out to a five-run lead in the first inning against the nationally ranked Longhorns but failing to hold and falling by a final score of 14-7. The team posted a 2-4 record on this swing, earning back-to-back wins over Prairie View A&M and Southeastern on April 8 and 10 while also falling to Rice and twice to the Lions to wrap up that set. The end of this trip did see the emergence of
Jarrett Flaggert at the plate, with the third baseman going 7-12 with four home runs and 11 RBIs over the final three games.
A&M-Corpus Christi now gets back in front of the home crowd against the Cowboys (20-17, 9-9 SLC), who come in riding a three-game winning streak after taking the final two games of their home series against UIW last weekend and their midweek against Grambling on Tuesday. The trio of Bryce Fontenot, Danny Barbero and Matt Stancliff lead the way for McNeese in the lineup, with all of them holding an OPS above .900 coming in, and Eric Nachtsheim helms the pitching staff with a 4-1 record and a 4.25 ERA in 11 appearances. The Islanders came up on the short end of the most recent meeting between the two schools, dropping two of three games last year in Lake Charles despite a 13-5 win in the middle game that saw five different players hit home runs, including Flaggert and fellow returners
Cade Sanchez and
Jackson Smith.
