CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After spending its first month of the season on the road, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will play its first home game of the year Wednesday when UTSA comes into town for a 4 p.m. matchup at Chapman Field.
The Islanders opened the Mark Montgomery era back on Feb. 5 and have been road warriors since, finally coming back for Montgomery's first official game played on their home field. It will kick off a four-game homestand, with this matchup leading into their first home conference series of the season this weekend against East Texas A&M.
The game against UTSA will also be the first of three remaining nonconference games, which will all be played at home. The Islanders will welcome Houston on March 31 and Texas State April 21 as midweeks throughout the conference slate.
Skylar Heger has continued being a power at the plate, leading the Islanders with a .306 hitting percentage off 19 hits and 12 RBIs.
Kayla Santiago is getting her collegiate debut season off with the team's second-best hitting performance with a .260 mark of 13 hits.
Returning to their home circle is
Kendra Winfrey, who has still been a strong arm for the Islanders from last year. She has thrown 55.0 innings including already having a complete game under her belt with four wins. She has struck out 31 this season.
UTSA leads the Islanders in the all-time series 38-28. The Roadrunners bested the Islanders just last week in San Antonio, but the teams split last year's home-and-home with A&M-Corpus Christi winning on Chapman Field 7-2.
Wednesday, March 11
4 p.m. – UTSA (14-11) at A&M-Corpus Christi (5-20)
