NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team climbed one spot on the final day of the Texas State Invitational, finishing eighth in the spring opener at Landa Park Golf Course.
The Islanders opened the tournament with a 309 before turning in back-to-back rounds of 302 to post a three-round total of 913 (+49), placing eighth in the 15-team field.
"First tournament of the season, a little rusty but we did some good things," said head coach Chris Adams. "We did make a lot of birdies, but we have to clean up some mistakes that led to doubles, instead of just bogeys. I'm proud of Sam and Tristan for both finishing in the top-20. We have two weeks to prepare for our home tournament, and I know they will be ready to compete."
Samantha Gibbs led the Islanders with a 12th-place individual finish after carding rounds of 77-71-73 for a 221 (+5). Her second-round 71 marked the team's lone under-par round of the tournament. Tristan Gabbard also finished inside the top 20, tying for 19th with scores of 73-77-73 for a 223 (+7).
Gibbs ranked among the tournament's top birdie leaders with 11 across three rounds and was one of just 12 players in the field to record an eagle during the event.
Lucia Ramirez finished five strokes behind Gabbard with rounds of 77-75-76 for a 228. Elsa Tornvall followed with an 82-79-80—241, while Hannah Creekmore rounded out the team scoring with a 255. Competing as an individual, Amber Martin posted a three-round total of 250.
