BEAUMONT, Texas – Hitting well over .300 on the day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team hammered home a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-17, 25-22) over Lamar Saturday morning.
The Islanders (5-9, 1-1 SLC) took over at the net and put up a .375 hitting clip with 46 kills through just three sets. It secured their first win over a conference foe this year, taking down Lamar (7-10, 0-2 SLC) on their own court.
A pair of freshmen stepped up and led the attack, with
Tatum Mason and
Logan Dyer both tallying the double-figure day of 10 kills apiece. Mason also came out swinging for a .471 individual clip, her third time this season hitting above. 400 with 10+ kills.
Junior
Kenna Buchanan neared double digits with nine kills while senior
Kaitlyn Baumann added six to the offense's tally. Mason and Baumann are both hitting into the league's top-10 in efficiency.
Running the spread offense was sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff who dished 31 assists and got past Lamar with five kills herself. It is her third 30-assist performance in a three-set match this season and fourth overall guiding the Islanders to above a .300 mark.
Redshirt sophomore
Brooklyn Jaeger picked up 22 digs on the backline, leading all passers on the day. It is her sixth 20-dig match of the year but first this season doing so in a three-set match. She has recorded 20+ digs in three of the last four matches.
The Islanders will now get their first full week of home conference play, welcoming East Texas A&M and Northwestern State next Thursday and Saturday, respectively, in the Dugan Wellness Center.
