CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team saw a hot start burn out as East Texas A&M rebounded after the first set and took the match 3-1 Thursday morning in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (5-10, 1-2 SLC) tallied two more kills than the Lions (3-11, 1-2 SLC) but 20 attack errors compared to the visitors' seven made up enough of the difference for the match decision.
The morning match did see A&M-Corpus Christi welcome in roughly 400 fourth-grade students from West Oso Elementary, Kostoryz Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary, and Menger Elementary for Education Day, presented by Whataburger.
A trio of Islanders put down 10 kills today, with the middle blockers going to work as seniors
Kaitlyn Baumann and
Katelyn Krienke each hit above .400 with their 10 kills. Junior
Kenna Buchanan also had the double figure day and added 11 digs to finish with the double-double.
Sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff tallied 41 assists to average just over 10.00/set on the day. It is her fourth 40+ assist performance of the year but first doing so in less than five sets.
Another steadfast performance came from redshirt sophomore
Brooklyn Jaeger who paced the defense with 18 digs. She has picked up at least 10 digs in each of the last 10 matches, with today being her 13th total on the year.
The Islanders will now aim to split the week and get it done over Northwestern State who they host Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
