Islanders Can't Replicate First Set Success as SFA Takes Conference Opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team got the conference slate off with a dominant 25-15 first set but the hot start got extinguished by SFA who took the match in four Wednesday night in the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders (4-9, 0-1 SLC) attacked fast in the first set, hitting a .324 clip as a team to take it 25-15. However, the visiting Ladyjacks (6-6, 1-0 SLC) found more of an offensive rhythm that got A&M-Corpus Christ out of sorts, taking the resulting three sets 25-21, 25-13, 25-10.

It unfortunately snapped a bit of a home streak in regular season conference play, as tonight was the first time the Islanders lost at home in a regular season matchup against a Southland opponent since the 2023 season.

A few Islanders made their conference debut notable, however, as sophomore Virginia Van Der Werff made her first career start in a league matchup and dished out 32 assists. She entered the night leading the league in assists/set at a 9.43 average.

Freshman Tatum Mason also made herself known, hammering down 11 kills for her first double-figure performance in conference play. She entered the match leading all league hitters in hitting efficiency and was near par of that average with a .333 clip tonight.

Senior Kaitlyn Baumann was also a top-10 hitter among the conference, tonight notching nine kills for a .368 individual hitting percentage. Freshman Logan Dyer gave her SLC debut a seven-kill performance.

Redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Jaeger was again steadfast in the backrow, picking up 13 digs against SFA. Jaeger was another top-10 conference player to watch, going into tonight ranked fourth in the league in digging. It marked her eighth match in a row to record 10+ digs and 10th overall on the year.

The Islanders will have to wait until Saturday to gun for their first league win of 2025 when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar at 11 a.m.
