HOUSTON, Texas – Despite getting an early set win, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team couldn't fend off a rally from Cornell who took the match 3-1 Saturday in the nonconference and weekend finale.
The Islanders (4-8) battled out a first-set victory in extra points at 27-25, but couldn't maintain the momentum as Cornell (5-5) took over offensively in the next three sets to take the match in four.
A&M-Corpus Christi's offense continued to see more of a spread today, however, with senior
Kaitlyn Baumann getting back into double figures with 11 kills on the day. Sophomore
Hadley Burger and junior
Kenna Buchanan each tallied eight kills while redshirt sophomore
Ally Saleh and senior
Katelyn Krienke both knocked down seven.
Sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff never made an error in her offensive attack today, notching four kills off seven attempts. Her highlight, however, was her second straight double-double after tallying 35 assists and 13 digs. Buchanan nearly got the double-double as well with 12 digs.
Leading the defense once again was redshirt sophomore
Brooklyn Jaeger who recorded her second straight 20-dig match with 22 today. It marked her fifth 20+ performance of the year, and she was named to the Rice Invitational All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the match after averaging 5.55 digs/set through the three matches.
Southland Conference play is now in sight for the Islanders, who begin their league run on Wednesday against SFA at home.
